Explainer motion graphics: making a complex service easier to understand

Use short copy, clear shapes and purposeful movement to explain a process without overcrowding the message.

Explainer motion graphics: making a complex service easier to understand

Explainer motion graphics are useful when viewers need to understand a relationship, process or difference. Movement should organise information. If everything enters at once and text disappears before it can be read, attractive animation does not help the message.

Start with a real question

“How does this service work?” and “What happens after I submit a request?” are clear questions. Break the answer into a few short stages. A video brief should identify what viewers will know at the end that they did not know at the start.

For a hypothetical image-production service, show reference collection, concept approval and delivery. You do not need to demonstrate every software setting. Choose information relevant to the viewer's decision.

Give each movement a reason

A new element can signal a new stage; connecting two shapes can explain a relationship; changing size can indicate priority. Decorative motion is useful when it does not interrupt the main path. Record the purpose of movement beside each frame in the advertising storyboard.

Decide what belongs in text and what belongs in the image. Narration need not repeat every on-screen word. A short label and complementary spoken explanation can work well, provided the silent version still communicates the essential information.

Choose the style for the content

Icons and text may explain a request process; demonstrating a physical device may require volume and viewpoints. The 2D or 3D animation guide helps make that decision. Judge the style by how well it explains the topic, not its technical complexity.

Review readability on mobile

  • Read the text at its actual playback size.
  • Reduce competing messages in each frame.
  • Use size and colour to show information hierarchy.
  • Allow time to understand every stage.
  • End with one clear result or next action.

Sound design can emphasise stage changes, but every movement does not need a loud effect. Research into generative sound tools also examines the relationship between motion and sound; it does not remove the need for human selection and mixing.

Agree on usable deliverables

Specify the final version, a text-free version if needed, and reviewed captions or subtitle files at the outset. For a Visionairt motion-graphics consultation, send a description of the service and the questions customers ask most often. Those questions can become the basis of a clearer script.
