Sound design for advertising video: more than choosing music
Understand the roles of narration, music, effects and ambience, and use a clear mix to make the message easier to hear.

Music can establish a video's mood, but sound design involves more than picking a track. Narration, product sounds, ambience and short silences all affect the viewer's impression. In a short advertisement, the first priority is an understandable message.
Give each layer a role
Narration provides information, music supplies rhythm and emotion, and effects can emphasise an event on screen. Audition's Essential Sound guidance organises audio into categories such as dialogue, music, effects and ambience, helping avoid processing every sound in the same way.
In a hypothetical perfume introduction, the sound of a cap opening may support the product's feel. If it occurs directly over the brand name, the word may be lost. Identify important spoken moments in the short-video brief.
Loudness is not clarity
Raising every layer does not make a video clearer. Speech must remain understandable alongside music, without unwanted abrupt level changes. Choose delivery specifications for the publishing destination rather than prescribing one number for every platform and type of content.
Effects should fit the movement. In explainer motion graphics, every text entrance does not need a strong sound. In animation, footsteps and impacts should align with the visible action.
Write narration to be heard
Use short sentences, clear verbs and specified pronunciations. Read the script aloud to locate breaths and pauses. If it is too long, remove repetition rather than forcing unnatural speed. Do not use a person's voice without permission or describe reconstructed speech as an authentic recording.
Test with ordinary equipment
- Listen through a phone speaker.
- Use headphones to check noise and rough edits.
- Verify names, numbers and technical words.
- Avoid abrupt cuts at the beginning and end.
- Clarify permission to use music and other audio files.
During editing and caption review, check speech and image together. Across a series, extend brand consistency to vocal tone and audio rhythm. Consistency does not mean repeating the same effect at every moment.
For a Visionairt sound consultation, send the picture edit, narration script and a few tone references. Knowing each layer's purpose supports better decisions about recording, music and mixing.
